Paul Mayen Burlwood Cube Coffee Table

Yet another favourite of mine is what the Americans refer to as burlwood. Burlwood is a term used to describe items made from Burr elm, Burr Maple, Burr Walnut and Burr Olive and a few others. Burrs or Burls form on trees, they are generally those wart like features you often see on a tree and in the cases of the ones used in furniture they are the very large ones. They effectively create these wonderful exaggerated grain patterns and make for wonderful veneers that in turn make for wonderful pieces of furniture. Take this Paul Mayen Burlwood cube coffee table for example. Its a wonderful piece of wood veneer that has been specifically chosen to be highlighted by covering it in a protective but also illuminating high gloss clear coat finish. The clear coat doesn’t light up but what it does is make the piece stand out and showcases the veneer beneath its high gloss finish. What you end up with is this cube table that is both beautiful and functional. In this case it can be used as a coffee table or a side table / end table at the side of a sofa. The table itself has been stripped of its original clear coat which was scratched and a new clear coat has been professionally applied and therefore it looks fantastic and has a real glow. Designed and made in the USA in the 1970s it has that wonderful quality feel that you get from beautiful mid-century items that we find is often lacking in modern items.
