An exceptional pair of Finn Juhl Spade Chairs (Model 133), originally designed in 1953 by celebrated Danish architect and designer Finn Juhl. Widely regarded as one of the defining works of Scandinavian mid-century modern design, the Spadestolen, or “Spade Chair,” takes its name from its distinctive sculptural armrests, shaped like the handle of a traditional garden spade.
Created during the golden age of Danish modernism, the design perfectly reflects Finn Juhl’s organic approach to furniture making, combining elegant sculptural form with exceptional comfort. The chair features Juhl’s signature backward-leaning ergonomic stance, designed to naturally cradle and support the body while maintaining an incredibly refined visual lightness.
Our examples have recently been professionally polished and structurally tightened throughout. The seat and back cushions have been newly upholstered in luxurious Dedar fabric from the acclaimed “Perfect Flower” range, offering a sophisticated contemporary contrast to the warm timber frame while remaining faithful to the chair’s sculptural Danish character.
These are iconic pieces of mid-century Danish design and highly collectible examples from one of the true masters of twentieth-century furniture design.
The chairs are presented in excellent vintage condition. The timber frames have been professionally polished and the joints tightened where required. Newly upholstered cushions in Dedar fabric remain in excellent unused condition. Minor age-related wear consistent with careful use and age.

Finn Juhl was one of the most important figures in twentieth-century Danish design and is widely credited with helping introduce Danish modern furniture to an international audience. Trained as an architect, Juhl became known for creating furniture that blurred the boundaries between functional design and sculpture, producing some of the most celebrated seating designs of the post-war era.
Unlike many of his Scandinavian contemporaries, Finn Juhl approached furniture with a distinctly artistic and organic sensibility. Deeply influenced by modern art and abstract sculpture, his designs emphasised flowing forms, floating elements, and the relationship between the human body and furniture. Today, his work remains among the most iconic and collectible examples of Scandinavian mid-century modern design.
