The Niels Moller Teak model 82 side chairs are a beautiful example of Danish craftsmanship at its absolute best. Designed in 1970 by Niels Otto Møller for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, these chairs combine comfort, elegance, and incredible attention to detail.
At first glance, the design feels light and refined. However, the closer you look, the more impressive the craftsmanship becomes. The tall ladder-back gives the chairs a sculptural quality, while the flowing teak frame adds warmth and softness to a room. Every curve feels carefully considered.
Our set has been fully refurbished. The solid teak frames have been professionally polished, and we have added new tan leather upholstery. The fresh leather works beautifully with the rich teak tones and gives the chairs a softer, more contemporary feel while still respecting the original design.
Many dining chairs look good but feel uncomfortable after a long meal. Thankfully, the Niels Moller Teak model 82 side chairs are different. The high back provides excellent support, while the slim frame keeps the chairs visually light and easy to place around a dining table.
These chairs were often called the “Embassy Chair” because embassies and formal interiors regularly used them. Consequently, they carry a quiet sense of sophistication without ever feeling overly formal.
The new tan leather upholstery also adds comfort and practicality. The leather feels soft and relaxed from day one, making these chairs ideal for long dinners, family gatherings, or evenings spent chatting around the table.
The Model 82 chair used a large amount of solid teak compared to many other designs in the J.L. Møller range. As a result, these chairs were among the more expensive models when new. Consequently, fewer were produced, which makes them harder to find today.
Importantly, the design still feels modern more than fifty years later. The clean lines and organic curves work beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. These chairs pair especially well with teak dining tables, minimalist spaces, and Scandinavian-inspired homes.
Their understated design also allows them to blend naturally into a room rather than dominate it. Yet, at the same time, anyone who appreciates furniture will immediately recognise the quality.
The chairs are in excellent restored vintage condition.
The Niels Moller Teak model 82 side chairs stand out because they balance craftsmanship with simplicity. Nothing feels unnecessary. Every line serves a purpose, and every detail improves comfort or appearance.
Furthermore, these chairs age beautifully. The teak develops even more warmth over time, while the leather softens with use. Consequently, they become pieces that genuinely grow with a home rather than simply decorate it.
They also represent a period when furniture makers prioritised quality above everything else. You can feel that care every time you sit down.
Niels Otto Møller was born in Århus, Denmark, in 1920. After training as a cabinetmaker, he founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944. From the beginning, he focused on exceptional craftsmanship and precise woodworking techniques.
Unlike many designers, Møller never sketched his chairs. Instead, he shaped and refined each design by hand over many years. Long before it became common, he combined traditional craftsmanship with CNC technology to perfect comfort and form.
His furniture quickly gained international recognition. By the 1950s, the company exported extensively to Germany and the United States. Later, Japanese collectors embraced his minimalist designs, and Japan remains one of the company’s strongest markets today.
J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik received the Danish Furniture Prize in both 1974 and 1981. Impressively, the company still operates as a family business today under the leadership of Møller’s granddaughter, Kirsten Møller. Every chair continues to be produced largely by hand, without screws or nails, maintaining the same standards established by Niels Otto Møller decades ago.
