George Mergenov designed furniture for Weiman Furniture of High Point, North Carolina during the 1970s. His work combined bold chrome structures with surprising elegance. This pair of George Mergenov chrome frame armchairs captures that rare balance perfectly. The chairs feel unmistakably 1970s, yet they borrow heavily from art deco styling. Think streamlined curves, metallic accents, and a glamorous silhouette that never looks fussy.
Look closely at each armchair. Three separate chrome strips start at the front foot. From there, they wrap around the side and continue across the back. This wrap-around design creates a beautiful, flowing line. It is also the most art deco feature of the piece. In the 1920s and 1930s, designers loved repeating geometric lines. Mergenov revived that language forty years later, but he used chrome instead of brass or nickel. The result feels both vintage and futuristic.
These chairs are not just sculptural. They are genuinely comfortable. The generous seat depth and gentle recline support relaxed dining, reading, or conversation.
We have reupholstered both chairs in Dedar mohair velvet. The colour is a subtle grey-green.
About the fabric:Â Dedar is a renowned Italian textile house. Their mohair velvet offers three things:
A deep, rich pile that catches light beautifully
Exceptional durability for daily use
A soft, almost fur-like texture
The grey-green hue works with warm woods, cool marbles, and neutral walls. It does not compete with the chrome. It complements it.
A pair of George Mergenov chrome frame armchairs suits many interiors:
A mid-century living room with teak and wool
An art deco-inspired space with black lacquer and mirrors
A contemporary apartment with concrete and glass
A dining room needing two striking host chairs
The chrome frame keeps them light and airy. The mohair adds warmth and softness.
